Does this sound familiar?

OCD is more than being particular or organized. It often shows up as one or more of these themes.

Fear of harming yourself or others
Worries about contamination or germs
Constant doubts about your relationship
Religious or moral fears (scrupulosity)
Health worries that won't settle
Fear of losing control

These thoughts can feel real and urgent, but they don't define you.

How the OCD cycle works

OCD runs on a loop. An unwanted thought brings anxiety, and a compulsion, whether visible or a mental ritual, brings brief relief. That relief teaches your brain the thought was dangerous, so the loop comes back stronger.

Treatment works by interrupting that loop.

  1. 1Intrusive thought. An unwanted thought, image, or urge shows up.
  2. 2Anxiety. It feels urgent and needs to be solved now.
  3. 3Compulsion. Checking, repeating, seeking reassurance, or a mental ritual.
  4. 4Short-term relief. The anxiety drops, for now.
  5. ↻The loop gets stronger. Next time, the thought returns with more pull.

How we treat it

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)

ERP helps you face feared thoughts and situations gradually, without doing the compulsion. Over time you learn to tolerate uncertainty and respond differently to anxiety. The goal isn't to get rid of intrusive thoughts. It's to change your relationship with them. This is active, structured work, not passive talk therapy.
